three-legged dog;

when a three-legged dog approaches
i do not stare and wonder,
i do not ask questions,
i take it in.
i fill his body with food and love.
i hold and nurture.
i keep him safe
from the world that has done otherwise.

today i broke out the plaster
and nails
and wooden sticks
to make him a leg
so he can stand again.
with strength.
to eradicate any wavering
or uncertainty.

i didn't build him up so he could run away
and break me down.
but maybe he will still know
the way
home.
